Engine Mechanical problem
2001 Dodge Intrepid 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 80000 miles

The engine oil light stays on after I changed the oil. New filter as well. Also the engine is making a clanking/banging sound. I am guessing the oil pump is not working allowing the oil to travel through the crankcase. WDYT?

HI: It sounds like no oil is getting to the engine. DO NOT START IT UNTIL WE DETERMINE WHAT MIGHT BE MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM! First, was this a problem prior to changing the oil? Also, is the engine oil full to the level indicated on the dip stick (betwen 4.5 and 6 quarts of oil)? If so, is the oil filter tight and not leaking?

Many times, by accident, the old oil filter's O-ring gasket comes off the filter and sticks to the engine. When you replace the new filter, it has two o-rings which will cause a major leak and no oil pressure.

Let me know what you find.

Joe
