Stalls when driving then starts right up?

Hi I own a 1999 Dodge Caravan it stalls alot mostly after ive been driving it for 5 or 10 mins. Or when im going slow it stalls then it will start right back up and run for another 5 mins or even less. I have never gotten stranded with it ever it always starts back up. I have replaced the fuel pump, the throttle positioning sensor and the fuel line and it still does the same thing I have ran it threw computer checks from many different places and nobody can tell me whats wrong hopfully I can get a few suggestions ty

It sounds like you need to replace the ASD relay also do a crankshaft sensor. This guide will help us fix it

My dodge caravan started "choking" as we drive it.
And sometimes it would stall out as we come to
a stop. It has become worse lately. Could it have something to do with the fuel system?

Hi:
Yes, it could do with the fuel sysem, but it could also be a sensor. What I suggest is to take it a nationally recognized auto parts store (Auto Zone, Advance.) And have them scan the computer for trouble codes. If there are codes, let me know and I'll be able to better help you.

I read an earlier mess: Question : 1998 Dodge Caravan mileage: 120,000. Transmission went on this vehicle. Transmission rebuilt and replaced. Vehicle starts and then it stalls when putting it in drive. Spark plugs and wires have been replaced. Engine oil changed. We can drive it, but it keeps on stalling anytime we go to stop also. Any ideas.

Answer: The lock-up torque converter may not be disengaging at idle.

Was not sure if this was the same thing? I had trans replaced several months back also the timing belt, but I believe this problem was before also. The van will die out when driving especially when A/C is running. Does happen at high rate of speed as well. The RPMs will just bottom out and die. In colder weather seems to run better.(Im not moving north sorry) thanks in advance

Hi jpreball01. Welcome to the forum. I don't blame you about not moving north!

Sounds like a problem with the crankshaft position sensor. They can be intermittent, especially when warm, but if this started right after the transmission was replaced, it is possible the sensor's air gap is all that is wrong. The sensor comes with either a paper spacer stuck to the end or a plastic rib molded in. Either of those sets the gap, then is expected to shear off when the engine is started. When reusing a sensor with the rib, the remaining part is supposed to be cut off and a paper spacer is to be used. I got cocky when replacing transmissions at the dealership. I'm an electrical and suspension and alignment specialist, but they needed me for some transmission replacements. After the first few, I started cutting the paper spacers into pieces so I could get away with using fewer of them. On the last one, I was so good, I didn't even need one! Two weeks later I heard the engine was stalling intermittently. Someone else replaced that sensor, but I'll bet it just wasn't set properly. Don't try pushing the sensor in further without using the spacer because it will be destroyed if it hits the flywheel.

My 1999 Dodge Grand caravan shut off twice while I was driving recently. I was able to restart it both times but I wonder what the problem might be. Any ideas?

Hi, could be almost anything. How long since a tune-up? Have it checked for possible trouble codes, see if anything shows up? Some of the national brand autostores used to check trouble codes for free.

My son is trying to limp along his 99 Grand Caravan as long as possible in this economy. Please help, we have tried everything! The van runs great until it has been on the road for about 1 hour. Then it will intermittently stall when you are making turns (primarily rights). We thought it was a fuel pump that had come loose, but the mechanic said it was great. Then we did a computer diagnosis and it said that the body control module was out but that everything else checked out ok. We knew there were issues as the guages had stopped working. We just replaced the module but it still stalls - plus, only some of the guages came back on. Any ideas?

Very common for the crank sensor to be bad
after it stall does it start right back up
or you have to wait a while?

Also mark and check ASD relay.

No, it starts right away. Acts like a fuel problem, the car just chokes out. It's getting more prevalent now, can barely make it around the corner. Before it would only happen after about an hour on the road

Fuel pressure test and fuel flow test should be done on it
hook it up to the gauges and drive it watch the fuel pressure
check relay mark them and switch them around

Hi well some vehicles are equipped with a safety feature that will shut eng down if it becomes low on vital fluids. But these are common mostly in industrial equip and high line cars. Yours however will not shut down if it runs out of oil. The light will come on and warn you but that will be yhe only warning. Good luck billymac

My cars check engine light came on then my whole car shut off I have already replaced starter battery. And ignition. Switch as I was driving everything was clicking radio speedometer. And that's when it died in replaced the alternator. With A 90 amp instead. Of a 120 car still won't start we ran the codes and no codes are coming up in have kids and I don't want to walk can you help please

The starter and battery have nothing to do with engine stalling. The secret to knowing where to start was the Check Engine light. That meant a diagnostic fault code was set in the Engine Computer. It would have indicated the circuit or system that needed further diagnosis. Disconnecting the battery erased that from memory and that valuable information was lost. That's why you aren't getting any codes. If no codes are setting while cranking the engine there are two ways to proceed. One is to find a mechanic with a scanner that displays live data and view the camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor status during cranking. They will be listed as "no" or "present". If either signal is missing the Engine Computer will not turn on the automatic shutdown (ASD) relay. That relay sends current to the ignition coil or coil pack, (you didn't list the engine size), injectors, fuel pump or pump relay, and alternator field.

You can also measure the voltage on that circuit to see if the ASD relay is turning on. It's usually a dark green / orange wire. You must see 12 volts for one second after turning on the ignition switch, then it must come back during engine rotation, (cranking or running). If it doesn't come back during cranking, suspect one of those two sensors.

Engine Cooling problem
1999 Dodge Caravan 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

99 Dodge caravan Stalls bellow -20 this was happening last 3 winters, -20 or lower the van stalls after driving few KM, then starts back good. Then stalls again after 2-4 KM When approaching a stop sign or a red light. It just cuts the power off. When it start doing this it will do 3-4 times in a row after 3-4 KM drive and then it will run very good for another few days.

1st winter when this happen I did a fuel system cleanup then it didn't do for the rest of the winter.

I have replaced the fuel pump 2 weeks ago, fuel filter, tune-up with new plugs, new battery replaced, this summer I got the time belt, water pump changed. But this was happening for last 3 winters.

Since this is an intermittent issue even Dodge dealership is not the promising with their diagnostic.

The cold days even after a over-night plug in won't help. It will start fine, then few KM drive will stall. When this happened I get a very strong burnt fuel smell or something.

Please let me when could be the issue, is it wrong timing in the timing bet, cold sensor?

Check the coil/s, crankshaft positon sensor if it has one and also do a fuel pressure test.

When I did the fuel-pump chnged he did a quantity test.
If fuel presure is low that means fuel-pump is faulty again?

Driving on the highway 60 mph motor will die out, it will restart, could be on the street going 30 mph does the same thing. Took to a repair shop they changed the fuel pump, drove 3 blocks did the same thing, repair shop said they showed a bad fuel pump. Any answers? ThanksI would donate I am a retired navy vetern. Have no way of donateing sorry.

Do you know the code. Probably none, if that is so, it may be an engine run sensor. The crank or cam sensor can sometimes shut off, and not throw a code.
I'll help you. What specific code showed up to cause the fellows to install a pump and filter? Which engine, 3.3? When this happens and there is no code the scan may not be picking it up. It is a question of how expensive or when the scanned code appears. Your moneys no good for me. Just your help is my pay. These men are the ones you thank who created the site. We get off on helping people, not money out here in Dodge world. Ok Sir
