Car was running fine. Parked at home after returning from store. 3 hours later went out to leave again and the car would not start. It cranks over but will not start. When you try to start it, and let go, it will continue to crank by itself for about 10-15 sec. All lights work in car, headlights still work. I turned the key to the on position to see if any indicator lights come on. The check engine light is tge only light that stays on. Before this incident with it not starting, there were no indicator lights on, and the car gave no sign of any problems.

While driving the engine (3.5) shutdown. We opened the hood and a smelly smoke was pouring from the alternator area. We replaced the alternator but the engine will turn over slowly and won’t start after replacing the battery too. The fuel pump has no power.

Hello,

Can you lift the lid of the TIPM to see if it smells as well? It is common for the TIPM to go out which is easy to replace the because it self initializes. The instructions of the replacement are below. Please let us know what happens.

When you turn the car over it sputters to start, which it does eventually taking about 3 to 5 seconds. You do not need to give it gas, it will start. If you do give it gas it will rev strangely louder than usual. Started purging vehicle first still sputters but not as long. What is it? After the first start for the day car will start no problem for a few times then it starts sputtering again. Is it the fuel filter? It's almost like it isn't getting enough gas when you first start it?

Are there any service engine soon or check engine light on? This sounds like a fuel pump or the crankshaft angle sensor has gone out. When you turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine over can you hear the fuel pump run in the tank for 5 seconds?

The codes are for the automatic shutdown relay or circuit. And your symptoms support that issue. This issue is pretty complex and requires some very specific testing procedure and specific equipment. It could be anything from the p.C.M. To the relay to the circuit. So I am going to have to suggest that you take this one to a shop for diagnosis atleast. Then maybe we could help you with the repair procedure.

Other Category problem
2000 Dodge Avenger 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 70,000 miles

At first, the car would cut out momentarily while driving, but not actually die. Then it stalled a couple of times, but would restart easily. Now when it finally died, it will not start at all. Put in new battery, nothing. 3 people looked at it and said it is not firing at all. Any ideas?

This is my son's car. It has trouble starting, mostly at night. We're in Lexington, KY and it's been in the 40's. We've tried: taking the gas cap off, moving the fuel line around, turning the key til the dash lights come on, pumping the accelerator, etc. I don't smell gas after repeated attempts to start. We just had the negative battery cable end replaced, it wouldn't tighten all the way. I'm thinking fuel pump or filter. What can we do to rule out other causes. We got an estimate recently, they thought it wasn't getting enough of a spark. Since I don't smell gas after repeated starting attempts with pumping the accelerator, I'm thinking a fuel problem. Thanks in advance for your help, Rick

If you think it may not be getting fuel you can give it a spray of starting fluid. But just a small amount.

Your welcome sir. Good car, glad its ok.
It is a nightmare with an engine controller handling spark and fuel. But not if you can read codes from it. Have a good day. Come back anytime. Thank the men who have given the country this avenue of information for all people.

It's broke!

Okay, that was the short answer. You can't get stuck on the first thing you find missing, spark in this case. The injectors and fuel pump are likely not working either. First of all, if you can hear it over the noise of the chime, listen for the hum of the fuel pump when you turn on the ignition switch. That will tell us where to look next. That hum will only last for one second. Listen by the tank while a helper turns the ignition switch to "run" if you have to. Do you have a test light or voltmeter and know how to use 'em?
