Intermittent whining noise

I've got a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser with 37000 miles on it. Recently, I've noticed an intermittent whining noise when accelerating out of a turn, such as pulling out of a driveway onto the street. Once it starts, it continues for some time, but only gets louder during acceleration, particularly when straightening out from a turn.
