Broken CV axle? CV axle replacement?

The CV axle broke while driving, when the new axle was installed, it too broke immediately. Every CV axle breaks. Originally, both sides were broken upon disassembly, after reinstalling the CV axle the passenger side broke. What could be causing the breakage of the CV axle? So far there have been three new axles installed and each one has broken immediately when attempting to drive the car. I thought possibly the differential in the transmission had failed, I purchased a transmission from a dis-mantler, yet the problem persists.

What is breaking on them?

When you reconnect the lower ball joint, before you install the axle nut, you should be able to push the outer joint inward toward the transmission a good 3/4" with heavy thumb pressure. It should pop back out under spring pressure. If it does not, be sure the inner joint is fully seated in the transmission.

Have you checked if the engine mounts are collapsed allowing the drive train to sit at an angle?

I did look at the mounts this evening, and I plan to change them out tomorrow. I read somewhere the number one reason for CV failure is motor mounts.

When I reach 45 to 50 mph my front end starts vibrating. The seats and steering wheel does to. I got my tires rotated and balanced and still does it. I think it could be my tires are bad. I think I need CV axles how do I replace them.

I have a 2004 PT Cruiser GT with a turbo, and auto stick. I am getting both noise like sounds as if I hit a pothole, or drove over a rumble strip. I believe it is coming from the right (passenger) side. Is there any recalls for this problem? Also I don't drive the car hard. Thank you Frank

There is no recall as such. Before ruling that it is the CV axle, raise the front of vehicle and get under it. Check both sides for torn CV boots, inner and outer, ball joints, sway bar links, and engine mounts.

My CV axle broke and I had just replaced it. Now the new CV axle broke. I literally just installed it and yes I put it in correctly. But I went to test drive my car and it drove fine for a brief second. Then I hear a noise. And the car appears to not want to shift into gear. Reverse. Wondering why a brand new CV axle would break. It took me a few days to actually come up with a tool to take the CV shaft that goes into the transmission out. Because it was not like the original CV. So no pry bar worked or anything that I did to get the first original CV out it ripped from the seal and left boot open and exposed gears. Wondering why would a brand new CV axle break like this? Also, what will make your front wheel drive vehicle not rotate or drive and does nothing while in gear besides CV SS?

May have just been a faulty shaft, as long a s the hub bearing is okay there really should not have a problem. The differential gears are okay as you do have drive initially. Put in a new shaft and see what happens with the car up on a hoist, if you have access to one, you can watch the shafts turn and see if there is any alignment problem. I do not like to run cars on stands, just not stable enough, so I would avoid that.

Hello thanks a lot sir. I do appreciate it. I have installed the new shaft. Took me forever getting the other one out. I had to build a tool along with using a slide hammer. And I do not have access to a hoist. I am pretty nervous to test vehicle and see at this point lbs. Because I called and searched high and low and no one was able to give me answers as to why CV axle broke in the first place. So I figured to check everything carefully as far as my whole suspension. Turns out I need to change tie rod end, lower ball joint could use a new one, and have to do an alignment. I knew I needed a alignment because my steering wheel was pretty crooked. But will post a a few pictures.

Picture of new CV axle installed as of now, picture of old tie rod end. I have replaced since this photo as of yesterday, and last picture is of lower ball joint screw that seems to be stripped and kind of rounding off. Not allowing me to remove ball joint to replace it. Any help on stripped or rounded off nut removal? Or alignment to at least get it safe enough to go get alignment done professionally?

Outer tie rod castle nut (original nut) or new nut that came with new tie rod end is just spinning screw and nut while I try to tighten nut to tie rod end. Any suggestions?

Put a little weight on the tie rod end with a jack not enough to lift the car just enough to seat the tapered bolt and lock it while you do it up.

Okay, I will put jack under knuckle then and maybe put my left hand on the top of tie rod end. Can you give me any tips or help on alignment on front tire driver side?

Just do a toe in using a length of dowel cut to size leave caster and camber alone.

MHPAUTOS hello sir, my tie rod end is actually on top off knuckle. So the stem from tie rod is on the bottom facing the ground. I cannot place a jack on tie rod end because it would only hit the stem!

Do all PT Cruisers have camber and caster? Because I did the CV axle replacement. And of course I had to take the two top bolts and nuts off of the knuckle from strut. Would that do something to my camber? Reason I am asking is because the two bolts broke initially in half. I went to my local scrap yard. And got two from the same exact year and make of my vehicle and used them. Now from up top looking towards the ground my tire appears to be more inward on the bottom and outward on top.
