2003 Chevy Silverado 4X4 and transfer case problems

2003 Chevy Silverado V8 135000 miles

I have a2003 2500HD Crew w/ long bed. I have owned it for approx 3 years w/ no problems other than replacing minor things. I recently made 2 trips across state and began hearing noises that I thought were U joint related. I live at the beach where beach driving is required. I recently had it out on the sand w/ 4 wheel drive engaged and it began to seriously bind all though the 4 wheel was still pulling the truck. I took it to the local garage and asked the mechanic to inspect the U joints and replace if neccessary. Following his removal of the rear 3 joint axle he tells me that the transfer case has a leak and that it has been there for quite some time. This being based on the fact that transfer was nearly empty upon inspection. It has continued to run smoothly when on the pavement in 2 wh drive. I have not taken it back out on the beach for fear of the whole thing giving up. The replacement of an entire transfer case is an huge expense that I was not planning on dealing with at this time. What is the best way to have this problem diagnosed. Can the OEM computer give me an accurate diagnosis? Transfer case also has a leak where the 2 halves meet. Apparently where the silicon gasket has given up. Is there a way to fix this from the outside

Do you
have the same problem?
