Well, here's the scoop, my friend owned this truck and sold it to me and it is in good drivable shape however, he said it wouldnt go past 40 MPH or maybe 35 but, it still drives. So anyway I figured I would do the inexpensive things first. -Tranny filter/new fluid
- VSS (vehicle speed sensor)

now prior to removing the VSS sensor it had weeped fluid around the seal and on the wire. Then I replaced it, so my systematic approach might be the cure to making it go over 40. Right?

I think you are on the right track. Has the new VSS made any difference? Is the check engine light on? What gears are working and have you checked the shift solenoids, TCM? If you have and all is good, chances are it is time for a rebuild or there could be a problem with the valve body.

Let me know what you checked and what gears are working.
