Serpentine belt fell off. Installed new tensioner. Belt was too big. Installed a new one. Still too big. Installed a shorter belt. Got it on but too tight, started burning rubber.I am sure the routing is correct. So now what do I do.

It's always easiest to use a serpentine belt tool, but it isn't absolutely necessary.

You'll need a long (18-24 in.) Breaker bar. It may need a 3/8 or 1/2 in. Drive. (You'll have to check your tensioner pulley)

Just insert the drive end into the socket on the tensioner pulley and pry up. This'll loosen the entire belt so that you can remove it.

Then install the new one and release the tensioner pulley. It will already be set at the proper tension. (So long as it was set right to begin with)

***NOTE***
Remember or draw out a diagram so that you'll know which war the belt wraps around the pulleys on your engine.

Replaced the tensioned fine but old belt is on absolute last legs. Have new belt, but can't get belt out, motor mount is in the way, as in inside the belt. Can't see how to remove without hoisting engine. How do I switch the belts? Routing and tension not the question here. Thanks for the help!

You have to support the engine from the oil pan and remove the engine mount to remove the belt. Good luck, any questions let me know

Yes a good jack will work, but becareful of the oil pan, they are some what fragile aluminuim. Try putting a piece of wood between the jack and the pan.

My husband changed the serpentin belt, loosing the pully tensioner and replaced the belt and now the belt smokes when it is running. The belt did go when it was being driven and there is also antifreeze dripping out quickly while the car is running it looks like it is coming from near the belt wheels and is leaking on the belt.

Noises problem
1997 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 190k miles

I was driving my Malibu and when I got home the engine was steaming. The tempature gage was normal and it sounded like an air leak/release of pressure. Coming from near the air filter not radiator, I also am having trouble changing the drive belt I cant seem to find a tention release so I can put the belt on and then tighten it, thank you for your time.

There are a few hoses back there that could be leaking, use a bright flashlight to see if you can pinpoint the source. As far as the belt goes, there is an automatic tensioner arm on the front of the engine. If you push on the belt in between two accessories, you will see the arm move, that is the tensioner. It shoiuld have either a15mm bolt or a 3/8 drive square hole to use for aw rench/ratchet to remove tension. top pic is for a 3.1 L the bottom is for a 3.4L engine

I had my serpentine belt replaced in a garage about a month ago because it was squealing and slipping off. Last week it slipped off again. I took the tension-er off and it was busted bad. I replaced it with a new one from Advanced auto part number 89241. Now the belt is not lining up and it keeps slipping off the crank shaft and half way off the idle pulley above it. What could be the problem?

Check correct tension and belt. Check that the pulleys all line up. Sometimes I use a long straight edge across pulley face, see if the other pulleys line up? Check that no pulley is trying to seize. That is all I can think of, at the moment?

I would recheck the mounting of the tensioner it sounds like the alignment pin is not in the hole.

Please let us know happens so it will help others.

Best, Ken

I took the tension-er back and got a new one just in case it was defective. It is 100% on right. Now the car either does not start or the belt just comes right off. Should the crankshaft and AC compressor line up perfect when a straightedge is applied to the outside? The crankshaft is about.05-1" further out than the ac compressor. From what read it could be the harmonic balancer. Any thoughts or suggestions would be grealty appreciated.
Thank you

Take the belt off, try to move all pulleys, in and out, up and down, even on the crankshaft, any movement? With belt on, can you easily turn any pulley by hand, if so, I do not think that is enough tension, whatever the reason. A different tension-er seemed to change things, correct? I don't where you got the tension-er? Can you try one from dealership? I do not like that one inch, can you easily move the ac pulley or crank shaft? With out being able to look at it, I am bouncing up against, I do not know.
