RPM's too high

Recently I have noticed that it seems to drag when I let off the accelerator and when I took it on the highway the rpm's are rising considerably higher than usual. It used to run 1500-2500 rpm average and now when I got to 40 mph the rpms were in the 3500-4000 range, any ideas?

Ive got a 98 Avenger, this didnt start happening to my car until the transmission started to slip
