Ignition key won't turn

My old ignition key will not turn at all. I have just replaced it and the new one will not turn over. The tick markes do not line up and it will only move backwards. Does the linkage and the ignition switch need to be replaced. What could be my problem?

Could be the rack slider in the column, or the ign switch on top of the column might have fallen apart
