We've had this LS since 03 and it started making some strange noise recently. It's a low whine that's changes with moving the steering wheel. I thought was the PS pump, but I can't find any leaks at all. Looking under the car there is a huge amount of what looks like the cheapest, nastiest grease I've ever seen. This has a shadetree mechanic friend thinking it's something in the drive axels.

It's all over the CV boots, where it's heavier, but travels all the way up. This stuff doesn't even feel like grease and it looks like it's got small gravel in it.

My guess is that if you look clese enough you'll find a boot that is split and spinning the grease out. Just debris kicking up while driving is probably where the grit is coming from.
