I recently replaced my fuel pump on my 1997 chevy truck. Took off the brake lights and unhooked the whole brake wires assembly off. Just to keep them out of the way. So after I put my truck bed back on. And hooked up all the wires again. They dont work correctly. Pretty much the driver side brake lights dont work. Untill you turn on the lights. And after that sometimes its dim. Or not even working still. HELP?

If the voltage at the rear is good, check the ground circuit. Black wire is ground, you could use a redundant ground, splice a jumper into the black wire, run it to a chassis or frame ground, see if it helps. Brown wire is tail lights, the other color wire is turn/stop. Here is the reverse light wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

1995 Chevy Cheyenne 1500 Pick-up, V6, 122k, 4 on floor manual trany, 2 wheel drive. I just got this truck from a carpenter to be used as a work truck. He said he never noticed the back-up lights not working. Both bulbs are good, both sets of 20 amp fuses (hood & cab) are good too. The brake lights and headlights, and all turn signal lights work perfectly. I have heard it could be a ground problem, BU switch problem, or ignition switch problem, but I don't know how to start my search. Thanks

I have a Chevy '94 150K miles, v6, manual tran. I had the same issue with my reverse lights. I hope this is similar to the same problem you are having. It came down to the reverse switch placed in the transmission. It was inexpensive and easy to change out. I hope this helps.

The reverse light switch is on the left rear of the transmission its a simple fix. With the ignition switch off and tranny is in reverse gear the switch should have continuity if not its defective.

Check fuse # 2 (15-amp) in the fuse panel (behind a cover in the dash, left of the steering column). Only manual tranny has back-up switch mounted on it.
