POSSIBLE TO REMOVE LOCKING CABLE (KEY TO SHIFTER)?

96 Cavalier automatic stick.

the only way to shift the stick is to first have a key in the ignition. Once shifted the key cannot be removed from ignition. I see it is a cable connection. Can I remove the cable totally from the system and still drive the car. As it is right now, the key is locked in the ignition and the shifter button is all the way out. I ahd problems with this unit a couple weeks back had the shifter knob off, saw lots of lube in the handle, so figure the problem is in the cable(dried out). Not planning to buy another new cable. $175. Is a bit rich. If I can get around it.
Your advice appreciated.
