Remove the console. In the diagram # 6 is screws to remove. The round discs in the picture may be screw covers, remove to see any possible hidden screws. Check out the diagrams below Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

1. Open the console compartment.
2. Refer to Console Trim Plate Replacement in order to remove one of the following components:

* The console trim plate - automatic transmission
Disconnect the shift indicator connector.
* The boot - manual transmission

3. Remove the screw cover (7).
4. Remove the screws (6).
5. Remove the console (2).

Check out the diagrams (Below).

Cheers, Ken

The shift cable connects to an arm that comes off of the transmission. It connects to the bottom side of the arm. What goes in it to hold it in place? Is it made together? Is there a retainer clip, or a screw or something?

Should be a "U" shaped retainer clip.

Thanks a lot! I actually found a mechanic to look at it last night and he told me what it looked like, circular with prongs coming off of it to hold it in. I really did not know because one of the Chevrolet dealerships told me I was going to need the whole cable when I told them I needed a clip. Just trying to make money and get over on someone probably because they think girls do not know what they are talking about. Hopefully I have the other Chevrolet dealer ordering the right clip. Thanks though.

Not a U shaped clip. That clip goes up more from where I am talking about. Looked at a diagram earlier. It is where the ball at the end of the shift cable actually connects to the lever.

My cavalier isn't shifting. It's a 5 speed manual. I can run through the gears under the hood but not all of them through the gear shift. Mainly 4th and reverse on the gear shift. I removed the console and checked the cables and they both are attached and moving when I move the shifter. The linkage also moves under the hood when moving the shifter. If one of the cables are out would it still move? I was going to use the donate question but wasn't sure how much to donate.

Yes, both cables need to move in order for the shifter to work properly. Carefully inspect the bushings where the shifter attaches to the trans arms. Also have someone shift it while you watch to see which one isnt giving what it needs to. Inspect the bushings where the cables attach to the shifter as well

I have the same problem The shift cable connects to an arm that comes off of the trans. It connects to the bottom side of the arm. What goes in it to hold it in place.... Is it made together, is there a retainer clip, or a screw or something?
I have seen a bushing for a 1999 dodge neon that looks like it would fit but I cant find where to purchase it locally so I can view it first.
Dealerships want to sell the whole cable

It should be a ball and socket fit - the cable has a "socket" much like a shoulder, and presses onto the ball much like a rotater cuff in the human body. I wish there was an easy fix, but there isnt. You need the cable, and its dealer only. Chevy got ya again. Not sure what it costs, but it is a fairly easy job to tackle.

If hold down clips have been removed, then use a screwdriver to pop it out. They do get rusted in the bracket and can be difficult to remove.

I just finish an engine install in my son's 1999 cavalier with 4 spd auto trans. It won't go in to park with the console shifter. I bought the "official" GM service manual and a Haynes manual for help. They both say to put the shifter to neutral and to manually rotate the shift arm on the trans to neutral. Then "push the tab on the cable adjuster in order to adjust the cable in the cable mounting bracket". I can not find a tab or anything that looks like one on the cable assembly. Of course both manuals do not show an illustration so I could use some help.
Thanks you,
Rod
