Shift cable

Remove the console. In the diagram # 6 is screws to remove. The round discs in the picture may be screw covers, remove to see any possible hidden screws. Check out the diagrams below Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

1. Open the console compartment.
2. Refer to Console Trim Plate Replacement in order to remove one of the following components:

* The console trim plate - automatic transmission
Disconnect the shift indicator connector.
* The boot - manual transmission

3. Remove the screw cover (7).
4. Remove the screws (6).
5. Remove the console (2).

Should be a "U" shaped retainer clip.

Oops I misunderstood, I thought you were talking about the cable retainer to bracket.

Yes, both cables need to move in order for the shifter to work properly. Carefully inspect the bushings where the shifter attaches to the trans arms. Also have someone shift it while you watch to see which one isnt giving what it needs to. Inspect the bushings where the cables attach to the shifter as well

It should be a ball and socket fit - the cable has a "socket" much like a shoulder, and presses onto the ball much like a rotater cuff in the human body. I wish there was an easy fix, but there isnt. You need the cable, and its dealer only. Chevy got ya again. Not sure what it costs, but it is a fairly easy job to tackle.

If hold down clips have been removed, then use a screwdriver to pop it out. They do get rusted in the bracket and can be difficult to remove.
