My van has an ABS problem. It wants to work every time the vehicle is coming to a stop. Doesn't matter what speed or how hard you press the brakes. Just before stopping, the abs kicks in and is very difficult sometimes to bring the van to a stop.
Do you
have the same problem?

Probably needs a speed sensor which I believe is part of the hub on those. Need to have a scanner that can follow wheel speeds and determine which wheel is not following the the other ones when the problem happens.

Its not too terribly difficult to do yourself

See the attached diagrams/instructions below for replacing the wheel sensor

Not always but often when I am driving slow and apply the brakes the pedal seems to push against my foot and I have to press very hard to activate the brakes. The problem seems to be in the ABS system. It never happens when I am backing up and never happens when I am going over 5 kilometers an hour.

It may be due to bumpy road conditions that is causing this. I am assuming nothing else is wrong with the system.

The road conditions do not matter. It will happen on paved or gravel, smooth or bumby.

The only thing without driving the vehicle that I can think of is that there is a low vacuum condition of some sort. Which on a power brake system would make the pedal do as you say it is.

You'll need a volt meter to measure the resistance. Also look into the rotors being warped.

Brake and ABS light comes on when you drive it for the first time that day. After you shut it off and drive it again it comes on some times but not always. What happens if it go's out while driving it?

If you r abs goes out you won't have abs working but with brakelight on have master checkedto see if it has failed. Make sure your fluid level is up to full.

Thanks for your reply! I put my 2001 Astro Van on a scope and it showed that the electronic brake control module and brake light switch were not working properly. Is the module for this van 69.00 also to be repaired? The switch I can get here for around 8.00 let me know Thanks gallenm.

If the module is no good then you need either a new one or get that one rebuilt which will require it being removed and sent away. They don't cost $69 as far as I know more like $200 for rebuilt you can find it on the internet. Your system will have to be rebled an dcould take up to 3 quarts to do it.
