Engine Performance problem
1998 Chevy Astro 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

my van runs great, after it warms up, but when I first start it and take off, it acts like its running out of gas, its actually backfired a couple times now, but once it gets going it runs fine. Also after driving the van for a constant 100 miles or so on the highway, when I come to a stop and take off again, the tranny bangs when it shifts from 1st to 2nd, it doesn't do this all the time. I've changed the tranny fluid and filter. If the first part of the post is fuel filter, where exactly is the fuel filter on this van

Hi:
First, have you checked for vacuum leaks? Also, the fuel filter is on the driver's side frame rail. Also, before replacing it, check fuel pressure. Most parts stores will lend or rent the gauge. Here is a video to view if you need to learn how to do it.

Finally, is the check engine light on?
