Okay here is how you clear the service engine light which is meant for the engine oil change reminder. Turn the key to the ON position without starting the engine then push the gas pedal down rapidly tot he floor five times and let up. Next turn the key off then start the engine up and the light should be cleared you mat need to do this a couple of times to get it to take. Mind you this will only work for the oil life reset, if it is the "Check Engine" light you will need a code reader/scan tool to clear it

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers

We recently changed the battery. We believe we have a constant drain related to an after-market VCR and TV that is installed, which requires us to change the battery at least once a year... More often if we don't drive the vehicle periodically. After this last battery change, the "Service Engine Soon" light came on and has remained on. We purchase good quality gas, tighten the gas cap tightly and the electrical system hasn't been exposed to water. We're wondering if (a) the batter change could have triggered the warning light and (b) how we can toggle it back off. The vehicle is due for a State inspection and likely will fail based simply on the fact that the warning light is on. Thanks!

The battery should have had nothing to do with the check engine light, unless something was disconnected. It will need a diagnostic code scan, If your onstar is active, they may be able to tell you what the code is for, but won't be able to clear it. On the battery issue, have you thought of having a battery tender installed? It is a low amps trickle charger to maintain a battery during storage.

Other online research suggested the battery situation might have triggered the light, but in any case it sounds like we need a diagnostic code scan.

As for the battery issue, a battery tender sounds like a much easier and cheaper alternative to having a full electrical system diagnosis. Thanks!

My service engine soon light has come on. Can you help me to determine what might have caused it to come? I know my oil has not been changed in awhile and the oil change light does come on.

Can't determine from here why the service engine soon light came on. It needs to be checked with a code reader plugged in. Most auto parts stores and repair shops will test this for you (most at no charge) and be able to get an answer from the vehicles computer as to why the check engine light came on.

User atest light to check EVERY fuse in the truck, under hood and in the interior. The diagnostic connector is powered by a fused feed. That is probably why the connector wouldnt power up the scan tool. Should be "cigar" fuse 15 amp in the underhood power center. The you can scan it to see what is going on

Does my escalade have self diagnostic mode in its information center display, to reveal the codes produced after the" service engine soon" light is illuminated. If not should a standard OBD-II code reader work? Or does Cadillac have a special reader software. The reason I ask is I tried a standard OBD-II reader. Tested and working
on a ford and a gmc truck. But it wouldnt work period on my escalade.

Hello -

To better assist you if you need to get back with me, please tell me if your model is just a Escalade or and EXT. Also the engine size in liter and the 5th and 8th digit of your VIN.

According to the manual you can use both but there may be some difference in the codes. I have attached that info for you.

SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS
PCM is equipped with a self-diagnostic system which detects system failures or abnormalities. When a malfunction occurs, PCM will store a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) and, in most cases, illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) located on instrument cluster.
There are 2 paths for accessing on-board diagnostics. It is necessary to access information through both paths, as each path presents some different information.
"Â Generic OBD-II

This provides all generic codes and some OEM codes, serial data PIDs required for generic OBD-II and some OEM PIDs, monitor status, pending codes and freeze frame.
"Â OEM

All DTCs, all PIDs, failure records, enhanced scan tool information and all other OEM scanner functions.

Check the 15 amp cig ltr fuse in the underhood fuse block(left fender). If it is blown, before you put a new one in, check your lighter receptacle for conductors like coins, gum wrappers, etc. This fuse also powers your diagnostic link connector. There is no on-board diagnostic provision on your Escalade, a code reader should work fine.

Hello -

Thanks for the info. I attached the pic of your DLC. You should be able to read codes from that. As I said, you can use the one from Cadillac or the other ODB-II but some codes as the manual said may be generic. There is no onboard.

gstacey also stated there is no onboard.

Hope this helps. . .. . .. . .

My gas cap broke (whoever heard of a gas cap breaking) but the top broke in two pieces. My Service engine soon light stays on. My local auto zone store told me to unhook the battery for a few minutes then connect it and the light would go out and if it comes back on have it checked.

I unhooked the battery but when I reconnected the light is still on. Never flashed or reset.

Suggestions?

Thank you

Have you replaced the gas cap yet? Alot of times the check engine light or service engine light soon light will illuminate when air enters the tank. This could happen from a small leak in a hose, a loose gas cap or in your case a broken gas cap.

It could be a just a loose gas cap that caused itto go on. But this is still under warranty if its an emission problem. Take it to the dealer
