V8 front wheel drive automatic 144,000 miles.

My car starts running rough after driving it for long periods of time it does not really overheat just runs on the hot side around 228. Once I stop car and cools down runs fine. Have checked the fan does come on does not seem to come on like it should or blow as hard as it should and do not think it is the thermostat because it does not do it all the time. But when it starts running rough it idles really rough the rpm's go up and down and when you press the gas it does not want to go like it is choking. I was told to check the temperature sensor, but I donot know where it is located at or where to even find it.

Hello,

Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor left rear of engine, near base of rear engine lift hook. Here is a guide that will show you what you are in for when doing the job:

Below is the location.

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

If you are talking about a Northstar, it is at the transmission end of the rear cylinder head, yellow and black wires leading to it. Visually, it is hard to see, if you see some grounds on a stud, it is slightly above that. If it is a 4.9l, it is in the thermostat housing.

I cannot find where it is located, I was told that it was near the thermostat. What do I have to remove to get to it?

To add to that, If it is a Concours it has a Northstar. The temperature sensor is located in the rear bank cylinder head, just below the heater pipe nipple at the crossover. Same sensor as the others, yellow and black wires.

Rear back of cylinder head at transmission end. Look down to where the transmission shift linkage is, and at the rear of the cylinder head is a small wiring harness (in convoluted tubing) that branches. One branch goes to a ground stud and has an eyelet terminal on the end, the other branch goes to your engine coolant temperature sensor (black and yellow wires).

You are referring to the engine coolant temperature sensor, yours is located at right rear of engine, below the EGR valve.
