Hi,
Have a 2003 Rendezvous, with a 3.4 eng. Automatic.
Car started overheating and we stopped several times to cool down and add water.
On the 3rd overheat, the red dash light came on then we lost power and motor shut down.
I never saw water leaking from the engine and no water in the oil.
Would a bad thermostat chut down the motor and not allow starting?

If it gets to hot it will shut down as a safety precaution. if it overheats quickly it cold be a bad tstat,if it takes a while it would be several things. when hot check rad for cold spots by putting hand on fins, make sure fans are inoperative. then have it pressure checked, you may have a head/intake gasket problem.

Hello im stumped 3400 engine overheating frist I replaced the thermistat. No change this is what happens. Start it up heat climbs. Alittle heat from the blower. Engine heat still climbing and max out. No heat at blower. Pressure biuldiing up. Top rad hose is cold. Bleed out the air from the bleeders. Top rad hose gets warm. Blower heat is warm. Temp gauge is good. Runs fine until shut it off and cools. Then starts all over again. I did a pressure test at 17#for 2 hrs it went down 4# no antifreeze in the oil no oil in the antifreeze that I can tell.I flushed the rad heater core and block I dont under stand how air keep getting in the system. Thank you.

Have the tests done below and try bleeding it again

Have it block and pressure tested-do the block first to pinpoint a combustion leaking into the cooling system or a gas analyzer to sniff for hydrocarbons at the radiator fill neck.

Pressure test: do not do a pressure test if there's leakage at the headgasket this might cause coolant into the cylinders and lock it up or bend a connecting rod if cranked thereafter. The headgasket should be repaired before doing the pressure test.

Bleeding it

Always bleed air from cooling system after replacing coolant. Set heater for maximum heat. Remove radiator cap. Loosen drain plug and remove drain bolt (if equipped) from engine block. Drain coolant reservoir. Fill coolant reservoir to MAX mark with 50/50 water-coolant mixture. Loosen bleed bolt and fill radiator up to base of filler neck. Close bleed bolt when coolant flows out without bubbles. Tighten bleed bolt. With radiator cap removed, start and operate engine to normal operating temperature. Add coolant if necessary and check for leaks.

Check fuse no.39/40 30amp

If the cooling fan don't come on time it will cause the engine to overheat-you need to check and test the fan motor, fan relay, coolant temperature sensor and the computer if its not turning on-

Hello my vehicle's temp gage would go up and beep like it was overheating then would go back down on its on and drive normal. I added coolant and it was fine for a while. Now when I try to drive it after going a short distance not even a mile it runs hot and starts to stall I tried to add more coolant but the reserve had what looked like a foamy or dirty mix of coolant and water. Have you ever heard of this and if so is it repairable? I know it has high miles but everything else was working fine on the car.

Have you seen any white smoke from tailpipe? Also check oil if it looks like a chocolate malt? If yes then probable head gasket failure.

My car is leaking a pink/orange liquid on the passenger side near the water pump. On the lift, the mechanic says it is wet around the pump, but not on the pump. When the hood is lifted, it spritzes water from the top. The fan does not come on when it gets hot. Please help.

You will need to find a shop that can pin point the leak and diag the fan problem. The to problems may be related. Did thay do a pressure test on the cooling system?

They did not have the equipment to do the pressure test on Sat. Will get that done on Monday :( Any ideas on what it might be and the cost to fix it? I am just worried that I will be ripped off when I go to get it fixed. Thank you for your help :)

It sounds like a water pump. If it is, the pump is about 89 and 1.2 hours for laboe

the other possibility is the lower intake. Thats around 800-900.

You need a new shop with proper equipment to accurately diag the problem correctly.

Have coolant system pressue checked for an internal problem like a head gasket. Also check t stat and radiator for cold spots. When hot. With engine off and fans disabled.

Hello, I have a 2003 Buick Rendevous. Over the past month of winter I have noticed the heater was not blowing hot air. Then a couple of days ago it started to overheat. We had to refill the radiator and the overflow which were almost empty. There is water leaking under the car near the tire on the drivers side. As well as into the floorboard on the drivers side. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The easiest way to determine the source of the leak would be to fill cooling system and put a pressure tester on it. Pressure testing the cooling system pushes air into the system and can show you where the leak is at without having to run the vehicle. I would sugguest not driving the vehicle with a coolant leak, because overheating can lead to more costly repairs.

2 weeks ago I had my intake manifold gasket replaced because my car was overheating. Today my car overheated and eventually shut off and would not start back up. Water was overflowing from the coolant compartment. What could have caused this since I just had the intake manifold repaired? Has my engine blown out?

Any of dozens of different causes. You need to refill and pressure test the system to find any leaks. It may not have been completely filled when it was repaired as this system is prone to air pockets. You also could have head gasket damage from the original overheating.

So I am thinking Florida weather is messing with my car. I have changed coolant in my vehicle. I do notice that my fans have visibly come on once. When the coolant got too hot and I got a red light warning on my dash.
A helper at O'reillys auto care suggest both a temperature sensor and thermostat replacement.
I do not know why he suggested thermostat, sounds like a pain. But what I would like to do and did do was change relays and fuses.
I have not noticed anything awesome and wonder how I can manually make the radiators fan come on.
I have read that of the two fans, one should come on with the A/C turned on
that is not happening?

Good evening.

The A/C system should trigger the fan when the pressure in the A/C system reaches 150 lbs.

The cooling fan should come on when the temp reaches 215 degrees.

The simple way to check the system is this key on engine off, remove the wire connector from the coolant sensor on the intake. The fans should kick on. That will check the entire circuit and controls for the fans.

Start there.

Yes, I also believe the thermostat needs to be changed yes, it is a pain but must be done.

No, do not throw relays and fuses at it at this point. Lets find the root cause of failure.
