My car overheated and needs a new thermostat. I left it sitiing for 2 days while I got the part the 3rd day I tried to started and the engine is lock, My mechanic tells me that I need a code to unlocked and that he charges 500.00 to unlocked it. Is this true and if it is where else can I get the code

The mechanic is making up a story to get $500. There isn't a code to unlock on the early cars that do not have drive-away protection or as BMW calls it, EWS. If there is a problem with the EWS, if equiped, it only takes a few moments to confirm and realign the system, if he wants $500, he is a bloody crook, offer him $100. What happens when you attempt to start it, does the starter engage, do the lights dim?
