I've a 1998 reg Audi A6 1.8T (just over 100K on the clock), MOT'd just a few days ago and for one day anyway appeared to be running perfect. A bit of history: the car has been sitting idle for 6 months, so I had to charge the battery. Car wasn't starting so put in some fuel and it started. Drove to MOT centre, passed then drove home (1 mile round trip). Drove 12 miles (all motorway) the next day, and as I was turning of the motorway and pressed for the brakes, there was resistance, loss of steering as the engine was dead. I didn't hear any unusual noises and the engine is so quiet when it cut out I just didn't hear anything. When came to a standstill, the battery is fine, all the lights are working but only a slight dull thud (only slight) and loud screetching noise when I turn the ignition key. I'm hoping it's something to do with the fuel pump maybe being clogged but I'm worried it might be the camshaft belt. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. :)
