This vehicle uses WS standard transmission fluid and has no other substitutes so ensure you have the correct oil and amount before attempting to drain the fluids.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID

ADJUSTMENT

1. PRELIMINARY PROCEDURES

a. Using compressed air or equivalent, blow dust off the thermostat cap to clean it.

B. Using a screwdriver, push in the shaft of the thermostat.
HINT:

i) Pushed amount: 5.5 to 7.0 mm (0.217 to 0.276 in.)

ii) Push the shaft until the screwdriver contacts the inside step of the
cap.

C. With the shaft of the thermostat pressed, insert a pin into a hole on the side of the thermostat cap. Insert the pin until it passes through the hole on the other side of the thermostat cap to fix the shaft in place.

HINT:

Pin diameter: 1.0 to 1.8 mm (0.0394 to 0.0709 in.)

2. BEFORE FILLING TRANSMISSION

a. When you have replaced the entire transmission, transmission pan, drain plug, valve body and/or torque converter, proceed to the "TRANSMISSION FILL" procedures.

B. When you have replaced the transmission hose and/or output shaft oil seal, proceed to the "FLUID TEMPERATURE CHECK" procedures.

C. Reinstall the overflow plug.

3. TRANSMISSION PAN FILL

NOTE:

i) This transmission requires Toyota Genuine ATF WS transmission fluid.

Ii) After servicing the transmission, you must follow the ATF adjustment procedure.

Iii) Maintain the vehicle in a horizontal position while
adjusting the fluid level.

A. Remove the refill plug and overflow plug.

B. Fill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out of the overflow tube.

C. Reinstall the overflow plug.

D. Fill the transmission with the amount of fluid listed in the table below.
Reference Capacity:

TRANSMISSION FLUID CAPACITY SPECIFICATION

Repair - Fill Amount
Transmission pan and drain plug removal - 2.7 liters (2.9 US qts, 2.4 Imp. Qts)
Transmission valve body removal - 4.7 liters (5.0 US qts, 4.1 Imp. Qts)
Torque converter removal - 6.1 liters (6.4 US qts, 5.4 Imp. Qts)

e. Install the refill plug.

HINT:

If you cannot add the listed amount of fluid, do the following:

i) Start the engine and idle it.

NOTE:
Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.

Ii) Move the shift lever through the entire gear range to circulate the fluid.

Iii) Wait for 30 seconds with the engine idling.

Iv) Stop the engine.

V) Remove the refill plug.

Vi) Fill the transmission with the remaining fluid until the amount in the table has been reached.

Vii) Install the refill plug.

4. FLUID TEMPERATURE CHECK
NOTE:
The ATF temperature can be confirmed by using the Techstream.

A. Turn the ignition switch off.

B. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

C. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

D. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / A/T Oil Temperature 1.

E. Check the ATF temperature.

NOTE:
If the ATF temperature is above 48 C (118 F), turn the ignition switch off and wait until the fluid temperature drops to between 43 and 48 C (109 and 118 F).

5. FLUID LEVEL CHECK

NOTE:
i) It is necessary to change to temperature detection mode in order to idle the vehicle appropriately.

Ii) The ATF temperature must be between 43 and 48 C (109 and 118 F) to accurately check the fluid level.

A. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Connect the TC and TE1.

Standard condition:

Indicator lights on the combination meter blink.

HINT:

When not using the Techstream, using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.

B. Start the engine and idle it.
NOTE:
Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.

C. Slowly move the shift lever from P to S, then change the gear from 1st to 6th. Then return the shift lever to P.

HINT:

Slowly move the shift lever to circulate the fluid through each part of the transmission.

D. Move the shift lever to D, and quickly move back and forth between N and D (once within 1.5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds. This will activate the fluid temperature detection mode.

Standard Condition:

Indicator light [D] remains illuminated for 2 seconds and then turns off.

E. Move the shift lever to P and terminate the Active Test on the Techstream

f. While checking the fluid temperature on the Techstream, allow the engine to idle until the fluid temperature reaches 43 and 48 C (109 and 118 F).

HINT:

The indicator [D] will come on again when the fluid temperature reaches 43 C (109 F) and will blink if it exceeds 48 C (118 F).

INDICATOR [D] INDICATION OF ATF TEMPERATURE REFERENCE

Below 43 C (109 F)
Turns off

43 to 48 C (109 to 119 F)
Turns on

Exceed 48 C (119 F)
Blinks

g. Remove the overflow plug with the engine idling.

H. Wait until the overflow slows to a trickle.
NOTE:
If the fluid does not overflow, perform the following:

i) Remove the refill plug.

Ii) Refill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out of the overflow tube.

Iii) Wait until the overflow slows to a trickle.

I. Install a new gasket and the overflow plug.
Torque: 20 N.M (204 kgf. Cm, 15 ft. Lbf)

j. Install a new gasket and the refill plug.

Torque: 39 N.M (400 kgf. Cm, 29 ft. Lbf)

6. COMPLETE

a. Turn the ignition switch off.

B. Disconnect the Techstream from the DLC3.

C. Push the shaft with a screwdriver and remove the pin from the thermostat.

NOTE:
Make sure the shaft of the thermostat is protruding from the hole on the cap.

D. Inspect for automatic transmission fluid leaks.
