If I have a old fashioned key and lose the original, is there any reason a spare wont start my car?

Lost my original key so got out one of my spares the next time I wanted to use the car (which was a few days later), and now the car wont start. The battery is fine and I have over a 1/4 tank of gas. The engine turns over but won't ignite. The keys I have are 'plain', i.E. No buttons, etc. Just an old fashioned key. The spares were cut at a licensed dealer with my VIN number. Can I rule out the possibility that it is the spare key causing this problem? Is it just a coincidence that it happened during this time?
The spare keys of course open the doors and can engage the starter to try and get the car going.
