COOLING SYSTEM PROBLEM

I have a 2008 3.6L CTS and when the car starts cold, the cooling fans come on immediately. Logic indicates that the fans should not come on until the engine reaches good operating temperature.
Is there something wrong? Is there some kind of a sensor that controls when the fans should come on?
It is quite noisy when you start the car.
Your help would be appreciated

Is the HVAC on? Is it in defrost or A/C mode? Both fans come on?

As Doc indicated, most late model vehicles engage the A/C compressor when heat or defrost is turned on in order to remove moisture from the air. The fans would automatically run whenever the compressor is on.
