I haven't experienced driving a car with ABS system before, but I just want to find out if how my car is acting is normal. Almost always, when I had to brake very hard and suddenly and I depress the brakes, it engages, then afterwards, I hear a metallic grinding sound, after which air seems to swoosh whenever I release the brake. The brake seems to be "soft" as well. But after pumping it several times, the swooshing sounds disappears, only to recur if I had to do brake hard.

If this is normal, what would you advise on making the swooshing sound go away faster? Is it normal for me to be depressing the brake pedal deeper after an episode like that (it does normalize afterwards).

Thank You very much.

Have the brake system checked. What you described don't seem normal.
