I'm in the process of replacing the timing belt in my 2006 KIA Spectra EX. I wanted to know what really causes the timing belt to break? Are there any other parts that I need to check in the process of changing out the timing belt? This is the first time the timing belt has been changed on this car, which is well over due.

Worn tensioners, worn idler bearing, old belts, I would say that being well over due for replacement is the main cause here.
