Above the brake pedal under the dash, you will see a switch with a 2-wire connector going to it. Disconnect that connector, and the brake lights should go out. If so, replace the switch, and that will return the brake lights to normal operation. Here are the instructions in the diagrams below to help you see how to change the brake light switch out to fix the problem. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Last night when I shut the car off and went inside I noticed that the brake lights stayed on. So, I got them to shut off by pumping the brakes. Later they were on again. Today it happened again. Got them to shut off by pulling the pedal up. Is there something I can do myself without taking it to the garage?

Check the brake pedal switch. Maybe it needs adjustment or replacing. Should be activated by the brake pedal arm.
