I would make sure there is no blockage anywhere in the cooling system.I have never seen a water pump not moving coolant on those engines.I have worked on them since they starting building them. Does the radiator fan blow out cold air?

Sorry we have had no internet for 4 days. OK, radiator cooling fan works. Car still overheated with no thermostat and lower radiator hose did not get hot. Mechanic at work says catastrophic blockage not as likely as pump failure. So, how would I be able to tell for sure if pump is working?

By seeing if the coolant is pumping out of the heater core hose when the engine is running. If it is then your pump is working. Does one of your heater houses get hot? Also check your heater core for being blocked. If you can get your heater working your pump is pumping.I would say its more likely you have blockage rather then a bad pump.

The only hose that ever got hot was upper radiator hose. I called garage to replace since I had neither the time nor resources to do it. Turns out water pump was good, however, nothing was flowing thru it, The chain jumped the sprocket and then subsequently broke. So now am having timing chain and water pump chain replaced. Oh well. But thank you everyone for your help.
