I have a 2003 peugeot 307 HDi and the temp gauge has started to jump suddenly
into the red zone (with associated flashing lights and annoying beeping
noises) and then go straight back down to normal. Sometimes it stays in the
red until you turn the ignition off and on. This can happen after a few
yards from stone cold and can go away for months at a time. Coolant level is
fine.

Well, the circuit works on ground resistance. So something inthat circuit is changing the ground resistance besides the actual water temp.
