CAR STOPPED WITHOUT WARNING. SMOKE FROM HOOD AND OVERHEATING BADLY

My son's car just stopped. Overheating and with white smoke billowing out of the hood.
It was towed away and the mechanic who looked at it briefly said coolant was not running through the engine.
What is the likely cause of this? Head gasket?

Could be a blown headgasket, cracked head or block-Best thing to do to confirm a headgasket -Have it chemically tested-
