I AM UNABLE TO TAKE THE TRANSMISSION OUT OF PARK

I am unable to take the transmission out of park. It is a floor shift model. It has given no indication of a problem until today when I tried to drive it. The car will start, and the steering wheel turns, but the button on the shifter will not release to remove it from the park position. Any ideas?

The park lock actuator is powered by the brake light switch. This may sound crazy, but are the brake lights working?

Thanks, I will have to go check that. I had to leave the car at my place of work, and it is out of town. I will check on it tomorrow. Can I assume that this is likely a fuse problem if I find the brake lights not working?
