Replacing serpentine belt

I have to replace the altenator. Taking it off was easy. Now I am trying to get the new one on and put the serpentine belt back on. The engine is so crowded I cannot find the tensioner. Where is it on this engine? 6.0L Turbo deisel.

"By the book" you are suppose to remove the upper fan shroud. On the older 6.0 you had to cut it at a certain groove on either side of the shroud (BRILLIANT!). However, at the dealership, we implemented a shortcut. It's not the greatest way to do it, but it saves 2 hours of time. The belt tensioner is on the passenger side, towards the bottom/middle of the engine cover. If you slide a prybar down, you can push down on the tensioner. DO NOT PRY AGAINST OTHER THINGS! It may take two people to get the job done, but we were able to change a belt on a 6.0 in about 6 minutes flat. Let me know if you have any questions.

I use two combination wrenches hooked together to get enough leverage to hold the tensioner while I slip the belt off, and back on.

Tis is how I do it if the room is tight, on a rear drive like yours, it's fairly simple. I thought I did answer your question, so I don';t understand the "getting your money's worth" Statement. Serp belt and tensioner is basic stuff, so what is the problem getting the belt off? No leverage? Not accessible? All you do is turn the bolt on the tensioner with some force, this will unwind the tension and allow the removal of the belt. To install it, there is a tool available to put the belt on the lower pulleys if you cant reach them, it's a thin bar with a hook on it.

Never mind. The special tool will not work since the 1/2 drive slot is recessed. So you have to use a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter with a ratchet and a piece of pipe on the ratchet for leverage and it fits in the tight spot on the vehicle I described. This was the answer to the question not here is a picture of how to put 2 wrenches together to gain more leverage. On top of that you never addressed the clip on the tensioner on this vehicle, which by the way is a short cut, if it works, so that yo do not have to uses any wrencehses at all. Now you can answer the next guy's question that is the same as mine with a bit more intelligence.

I have never had to use pipe to change a belt. And you can put a wrench on the bolt on the tensioner pulley. Good luck with your intelligent answer.

Note the diagram for single alternator serpentine belt. See #8 that is the tensioner, looks like a drive cavity, don't know the size, 3/8/or a 1/2. Use a long handle rachet or breaker-over, whatever is easier, push to release tension.

There is an automatic tensionier that needs released. Once you turn it, the belt will come off. Go to our homepage under the DIY section. Go to belts and it will provide the belt diagram you need for your vehicle.

It should be a 15mm. But we just look at what type of tool is needed, and if it's an open-end wrench or socket, we try a few to find the right one. Some replacements use a square drive, usually 1/2", as found on the end of a ratchet or breaker bar.
