CV Axle and seal replacement instructions please?

I just had rack and pinion and power steering pump replaced. Mechanic said my right front axle boot was cracked and to keep an eye on it. They said if I heard a clicking sound when making a slow turn that I would need to replace. How long can I go before I need to replace and how much should it cost?

Hi,

If you hear the clicking noise, it should be replaced. Since the boot is already torn, use it until you notice a change or the noise.

At one time, we would remove the axle, then the CV joint, and then replace the boot. It is no longer cost effective to do that. New axles with both new joints are usually well under a hundred dollars. Labor is right at one hour for one side.

What size socket do I need to remove the axle nut on my 2003 Chevrolet Impala LS 3.8? And is it a deepwell socket that is needed?

Hello,

Here is the socket size is 30mm or 28mm they sometimes change with suspension packages. Here is some additional information along with a guide to help you get the job done.

Front Drive Shaft Nut 160 N.m (118 lb ft)

Car shakes while accelerating only any speed. Goes away when I let off the gas.

An aquaintance of mine ran into this same problem with the same year Impala. I am not saying this is your problem, but after rebalancing all the wheels, replacing the front wheel beaings, front struts and bearing plate the vibrations was still there. He found the problem to be a failing C/V joint that was not making noise and due to the design of the vehicle there was no evident play untill removed from the vehicle and checked. The gentleman has been a working on vehicles for about 25 years, so this was not a rookie mistake.

Okay, I attached the location of the seal for you. Make sure the axle is seated on the C clip. If it is not, it can move in and out and will leak fluid.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the left front tire and wheel.
3. Remove the left stabilizer shaft link from the left lower control arm.
4. Remove the left tie rod end from the left steering knuckle.
5. Remove the left lower ball joint from the left steering knuckle.
6. Remove the left drive axle from the transaxle.
7. Secure the left drive axle to the left steering knuckle and strut.
8. Use a flat bladed screwdriver or a suitable tool to remove the oil seal (409) from the transaxle side case (401).

Installation Procedure

1. Lubricate the seal lip with transaxle fluid.

Important: Carefully guide the axle shaft past the lip seal. Do NOT allow the shaft splines to contact any portion of the seal lip surface.

2. Install J 37292-B in the seal (409).
3. Use J 34115 to install the new seal.
4. Remove the J 37292-B.
5. Install the drive axle to the transaxle.
6. Install the left lower ball joint to the left steering knuckle.
7. Install the left tie rod end to the left steering knuckle.
8. Install the left stabilizer shaft link to the left lower control arm.
9. Install the left front tire and wheel.
10. Lower the vehicle.

Notice: Refer to Do Not Overfill the Transmission Notice in Service Precautions.

11. Adjust the fluid level.
12. Inspect for proper completion of the repairs.
13. Inspect for proper fluid level.
14. Inspect for fluid leaks.

Can someone help me, I need to replace the front axle seal on this vehicle, need to do it in driveway, what is the easiest way to remaove the axle to get to the seal. Can I remove the spindle assy and pull the axle out far enough to remove the seal, or can I split the ball joint and pull the spindle strut assy out far enough to pop the axle out and replace the seal. It has been awile since I have done one and just doing resurch before I get started.

You need to undo the bolt on the wheel first then amack the axle with a hammer to break it loose. Then take the wheel off, undo the nut that holds the ball joint on pop that loose, take a big screwdriver and pull the axle out all the way, replace the seal and reinstal everything.
