What would cause the car to die out when shifting into gear

I already took it off to see if it was plugged or stuck but it's not is there any other way to verify

Also to maybe you can help me with this I get a loud screeching sound its not a belt because I took the belt off that goes onto the water pump to see if it was the cause but it wasn't. The sound is coming from the camshaft pulley part will post a picture. The screeching gets louder as I rev the engine. Could it be I might have overtightened a camshaft holder and it is rubbing against the camshaft journals.

I didn't replace the timing belt, this car has a timing chain. I replaced the head gasket.

The side that I am referring to that the noise is coming from is the water pump side. The timing chain is on the opposite side of the picture I posted

Question when I take off the caps that hold the camshaft in place should there be oil underneath them

Okay so everything checks out I had a buddy of mine come over and we put are heads together so nice we kind of think we know what the problem is I just put a new starter in and something is telling me than when it is engaged it is not able to fully come back out and it is grinding on the flywheel thus the loud squealing sound. What do you guys think another note when I first start the car you can hear the flywheel and the starter clashing
