Hello,

These transmission had a problem internally with the clutch pack seal that engages reverse. The only fix is to remove the transmission and rebuild it. But to be sure scan the car for codes to see if there is a speed sensor error, also there is a chance the TCM has gone out which would scan the codes to determine.

here is a guide

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

Also I have included the TCM replacement instructions in the diagrams below. Check the electrical connector because they can get moisture in them. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

Good evening,

Are there any codes set?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/automatic-transmission-problems

If all your forward gears are good then most likely a band has failed internally or a valve body issue. It is not an electronic issue as the reverse has no electronic controls for it to engage.

I attached the description for you of the no reverse.

There is no solenoid control for this. It is mechanically controlled by the valve body. Good chance the clutches are worn out. The transmission will need to be removed and inspected.

Hello everyone. I purchased this van with a big leak on the Shift Solenoid Pack that made the transmission not shifting into any gear. I change the gasket of the Shift Solenoid pack, no more leak. I complete the fluid. But the transmission wont go into reverse. Please any help will be gladly appreciate. Next step.

Good morning,

Do the forward gears all work correctly?

This sounds like internal failure in the transmission.

There is nothing external to cause the failure as long as the forward gears are good.

Hi. Good morning. I scan the van today and p0700 and p0732 can out. When I turn the car on take off on first gear but immediately. Go on neutral and I have to turn the car off on parking so I can put it on gear. But reverse still dont work.

It will not. We already discussed that.

The 732 is for incorrect gear ratio to second gear which indicates slippage internally. This goes back to internal issues with the transmission.

I have a 02 Caravan, 3.3L, FWD with 154K miles. The other day it went into "limp mode" after slipping between shifts in "D". Check engine light came on at the same time. Checked fluid level at that time and it was slightly low, but not below "cold add", so I topped it off. My wife was driving it the next day and said she stopped at a friends house, put it in reverse to leave and it wouldn't move. I have done a filter/fluid change. The fluid that came out wasn't "burnt", but would be "well used". (I think it was the original fluid.) Is it possible that it could be one of the following: (1) Control Solenoid. (2) TCM. (3) speed sensors. Am hoping it's not totally shot. Forward gears shift just fine with no slippage or hesitations.

Forgot to add that when you put it in reverse, the rpm will drop to around the same as when you put it in drive and hear/feel it "thunk" into gear, there just isn't a "thunk". If the van is on a slope and rolls freely in neutral, it will hold in place in reverse. It just won't go anywhere when you apply throttle. There aren't any loud or out of place sounds that I can tell when you give it throttle in reverse, either.

It sounds like one of two things has happened first does the light for the reverse gear selector light up when in reverse? If the light is not working it can be the transmission position sensor is out. Here is the location of the sensor.

If the light is working then it sounds like the transmission has had an internal failure and needs to be rebuilt.

Check out the diagrams (Below)

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers

Hello, I recently had the reverse gear go out in my 2000 dodge grand caravan. I had just backed up to load some things in, put in park turned off engine. I had to back up a little further so I got in started engine put in reverse and it would not move. So I gave it some gas and it seemed to sputter and bog down but no movement. All other gears work fine while driving. I have never had a problem with it before now. Code reader shows nothing wrong. I am hoping someone out there has an easy fix as I am out of work an not much money for costly repairs.

Thanks in advance

Hello,

I have seen this problem before the transmission position sensor goes out causing the transmission not to go into reverse. Here is the location so you can get the part replaced.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers

Hello -

To better assist you is this just a Caravan or is it a LE or SE?

It would really help if you please go to Auto Zone (AZ) or O'Reilly's (OR) and for FREE they can pull the codes to the car. Most important: Once they check your codes, if they find something and you don't get it fixed and need to get back with us, please make sure you tell us exactly what the code was, number and all. Example, if the code was E0568 O2 Sensor bad. Then make sure you give us all of that. While there for FREE also they can bring their tester out and check your battery and alternator.

Without any codes it is possible it is the following from the troubleshooting chart.
