My car's RPM gauge will normally idle at 1000.

My car's RPM gauge will normally idle at 1000 rpms but when stopped it'll drop down to roughly 800 and my dash lights will dim. The rpms will also increase to roughly 2000 when coasting along (foot not being on the pedal) and my biggest concern is that when I brake the rpms rise to 1500, I'm not sure what is going on and I just had my car in the shop last week so I really don't want to take it in until I know what the problem is. Any ideas?
