My Check Engine Lite stays on I was told a year ago I
needed a computer. Sometimes when I turn on my heat I smell oil. If I dont let the car warm up I have hard time moving the steering wheel and the car is making this loud ratlling noise llike its going to breakdown if I get the computer will it solve these issues?

How is a computer going to solve a mechanical rattling noise? When the Check Engine light is on, a diagnostic fault code has been memorized in the Engine Computer. Replacing the computer won't solve the problem. It's doing what it is supposed to do. A new computer will detect the same problem and turn on the Check Engine light again. The code needs to be read which will lead the mechanic to the circuit or system with the problem, not necessarily the specific part.

Lack of power assist is usually caused by a worn power steering pump. The power assist will come back if you raise engine speed a little. The clue is turning in both directions are affected equally. If steering is hard in only one direction, the fix is to replace the rack and pinion steering gear.

An oil leak and a rattle must be visually inspected by a mechanic. There's too many possibilities to make a guess.

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

Check for applicable trouble codes. Some of the national brand autostores used to check codes for free.

Stepping on the brake can be a closed throttle issue. The system may be going rich or lean, then corrects itself when you step on the throttle.

My service engine soon light came on and on the way to get the code it went off. Someone told me that even though the light went off I could still get the code pulled because it stores it in the cars memory. Is this true. Thank you.

To save time and money Autozone will scan it for free, post all codes here. Code should be stored in memory.

Car will start and then die when it is cold. The problem will sometimes last many days, then it will start fine. It seems to be affected by outside temperatue. When warm the problem does not occur as often. It will stay running with a little foot on the pedal. After warm up, it generally will start again OK. Once warm and sometimes just after a mile or 2 of driving it runs great. What should be checked? The check engine light does not come on. There are 213,000 miles on the car.

Thank you!
