It has been getting harder to put our car in gear for the last few weeks. Today, we backed up, tried to put it into 'drive' and it went into low gear. We were close to home and when we got home tried to put it into park and heard a snapping sound. The gear shift moves easily now, but the car is still in low gear and we cannot start it as it needs to be in 'park' to start. What happened and how costly a repair is this?

The shifter cable was frayed and sticking, and now it finally broke. That isn't common so you should have good luck with a used one from the salvage yard.
