Trying to replace cabin filter. Can't remove glove box - took out screws. Box won't drop down. Problem seems to be at the light button and the trunk remote control buton. Didn't want to force it.

Hello and thanks for the donation!

Try this..to remove the cabin air filter and glove box, first open the glove box and remove the 5 retaining screws. Now that you are past that part already, you will need to use a flat bladed screwdriver to remove the lower panel.

This will gain access to the electrical connector that you need to disconnect. Now you can remove the blove box and filter cover from the blower unit. Pull out the filter and remove the air refiner filter from the frame.

Installation is reverse of these procedures..

I've done the 5 screws. Diagram mentions 2 clips. I don't see any. Where do I insert the flat bladed screw driver to remove the lower panel?

2 clips are at the very left and very right of the end screws at top. Find the edges of the panel and start popping out the clips that hold it in by pulling it outward with a flat bladed tool / screwdriver

I began noticing a terrible smell last week - I was not running the air conditioning. I just turned the car on and could smell what I would call a rank odor - not so much rotten eggs but a "bad compost" or moldy smell. Someone suggest I bring my car in to have the cabin filter changed, others say it is the new gas mixture?

Do you have an opinion or advise?

Most likely it's mold in your a/c system from a hole somewhere. It can be cleaned out but there will still be a small smell usually left over even after cleaning.

There's no need to remove the entire glove box. Open the glove box, push in on the back of the glove box to unhinge 2 clips on both sides of the box, some models also have a small screw located in the bottom right hand corner on the outside of the box which you will have to remove. Once both hinges are loose pull down and the glove box comes down. To reinstall simply screw the screw back in and push up, the hinges will go back to place.
