My car makes a heavy knocking sound in front when I apply brakes what could be the problem?Its a 4wd and the brakes have been checked and they are in order.

Time for an inspection at a tire and alignment shop. Knocking is generally the result of worn ball joints, control arm bushings, struts, upper strut mounts, and sometimes tie rod ends. Upper strut mounts can be hard to diagnose and next to impossible to know when they're worn until they're disassembled to replace the struts.
They'll also look at the brake caliper mounts to see if rubber insulators are missing or damaged.
