What should I do with my broken car?

My car broke down about 6 weeks ago. The mechanic who came out to see it presumed it was the head gasket but couldn't be sure, but it is definately an expensive fix. Although it started at the time, it now won't start at all so I can't take it anywhere to get looked at.
How can I get the most money for my car? Scrap car schemes are offering me around £80 for the car, but other than the gasket, the rest of the car is in great condition so that seems like a waste. How much do you think it will cost to fix, and would I save more money by fixing it or selling it for parts and buying a new one? Basically, what should I do with the car and what would save me the most money?

Do you
have the same problem?
