On the highway doing 60mph or at a stop sign the engine just shuts off. No puttering or any type of warning. The dash board shows (check gauges)

Hi:
First, I need you to have the computer scanned at a nationally recognized parts store. They will most likely do it for free and it will direct us in the right direction.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

When I was able to get it to stay running by forcing gas to the car there was black smoke coming from tailpipe. Fuel pressure was 50lbs. Psi. Changed fuel filter, and relay switch, took off fuel pressure regulator and it was full of gas. So is it the fuel pump or the regulator?

So the fuel pressure is 50psi right now? Also if you pull the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line off while it was mounted was there fuel in the vacuum nipple area?

So you still have 50psi of compression? So when the engine was running you had black smoke coming out the tail pipe and it was running rough?Any codes in the computer?Hows your coolant temp sensor? What is your compression readings?Do you have a nic blue spark to all the cylinders?

Cant keep the car running long enough to check anything. No check engine light. When it did run by pressing the gas pedal and forcing gas to it, it sounded awful, and yes black smoke, but as soon as you let off the gas it cut off.

Hello, as far as the starter system, is the theft system acting-up?

Some of the feed circuits for the starter and power windows come from the ignition switch. Whether it is the switch or wiring circuit? When the problem occurs, you might check the 10 amp radio fuse. That feed goes to the control side of the power window sunroof relay. You need to check for voltage at the fuse terminals.

Check the fuel pressure again see if the fuel pressure is bleeding down when the fuel pump isnt running? Also pull the spark plugs and see if the spark plugs have excessive fuel build up on them.

There is a recall on the Pontiac's Fuel pressure Regulator's. This sounds like your problem. Call pontiac with your vin# and get it fixed for free.

Cranking is starter action. You can have starter action without the vehicle starting.

My check engine light is on, and the code says Maf Sensor or VAF a circuit low input. The car will be fine at times, but then other times the idle will surge up and down. Then when I am driving along, the car will just die, but then it starts right back up. It seems that when I take my foot off the gas at slower speeds is when the cars idle will surge and then die. Sometimes the check engine light will go off by itself and then come back on at some point. I have used a code reader to clear the code, but every time the check engine light comes back on it gives me the same code. Do you think it is the MAF sensor or possibly just something else triggering the computer to think it is the Maf sensor?

Hi, I have a 99 bonneville that we just replaced the fuel pump on because poor pressure. I don't think that created this problem tho. The car starts when cold and runs fine for a couple of minutes, then begins rough idle and stalls. When you try to restart it starts and dies. It will not run untill completely cold again. What could be the problem?

Confirm that the fuel pressure is within specs if okay Inspect and test the idle air control valve/coolant temperature/throttle position/MAF and MAP sensors

It will not run untill completely cold again. When it does this do below immediately and see what happens this will determine if its fuel or spark problem.

Do you have a check engine light On or flashing prior to this problem?

If the engine's condition is in tip top shape-do below to determine if its fuel or spark problem that's if its cranking over and refuses to start

Get a carb cleaner and spray into the carb or the throttle body on an EFI. Did it start and die? If not disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors-

If both fuel and spark is present-check the valve and ignition timing, this will lead you to problems with compression and valves opening and closing at the wrong time

I have 1999 Pontiac Bonneville while driving for about an hour of highway driving it will start to lose power and then will stale dan die. It will normaly take 10 mins to an 1 hour to restart. I have taken it to a pontiac dealership and first the said it was plug, wires, and oxygen sensor. They replaced them and sent me on my way. That didnt fix it. So brought it back and they said it is the crank sensor. So they placed and sent me on. Again didnt fix. Now they replaced the fuel pump and sent me on. And didnt fix it. What do tou think?

Hard to say over the computer, Is the check engine light on/or do you know any codes stored? When the car is failing(not starting) we need to know what is missing, (spark, fuel, pulse) to properly diagnose the problem. Check this link to assist you: https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-cranks-but-wont-start
