It wont stay running

Hello Jack - once again thank you for the info but I confess I must be a moron as I still do not understand what is to be fixed. Your first response indicated the (mechanic) should have fixed the problem when replacing the fuel pump. If the baffles cannot be replaced, would that indicate I would need an entirely new fuel tank or is there some way to repair the baffles? Thanks again, much appreciated.

Why does my car stall? I can be out riding and my car shuts off with out warning. I have to pull over to restart. After a few trys it will restart. What is my problem?

My bad. Sometimes they come loose in the tank and need new nuts to hold them down, if the studs in the tank are bad, then you may need a new one

Has the check engine light come on? Also, have you checked fuel pump pressure?

Thank you for your reply! To answer your question. (Yes) the check engine light is on and has been on since we purchased the car. No I haven't checked the fuel pump pressure. But how do you check the fuel pump pressure?

Have the computer scanned first. Most parts stores will scan it for free, and since the light is on, there should be a trouble code stored.

LEt me know what you find. If this doesn't help, I will explain how to check fuel pressre.

I had the fuel pump installed and I let the car run for about an hour and a half and it didn't cut off. Thank you for all your help

That is good news. My first concern with the light being on was sensor related. That is why I wanted you to have the computer scanned then check the fuel pump. However, a fuel pump can cause a misfire setting the computer.

Okay so I'm hopeless about my car. I have a 1999 Bonneville SE. Not supercharged. Originally the engine would turn on and it would start but then die after a couple seconds. Then I changed the EGR valve and the Mass Airflow sensor, AND spark plug wires and it would run for longer and stay idling. But when I put it into gear it would die and backfire. THEN I changed the spark plugs because the scanner was throwing a random cylinder misfire, which was I assumed to be spark plugs because I just replaced the coils and the wires and everything. Now I try to start it and it's back to square one. Dies right away and backfires. I've put over 350 dollars into this thing to fix it and I still cant figure it out.

These have a oil pressure switch that runs the fuel pump and cuts it off if there is no or low oil pressure. I would check your engine oil and then check the sensor. Below is the location. Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.
