1999 Dodge ram, 135,000 mi. - Air conditioner blows cold, when engine is accelerating the fan diverts to the dash defrost outlets, when engine catches up it reverts back to vents but A-C turns off. If turn off A-C for a few minutes and back on the A-C works again.

The system is spring-loaded to default to defrost when engine vacuum is lost such as when accelerating. Look for the check valve in the vacuum line going to the firewall. It's the size of a stack of three nickels. Replace it with one with a storage canister from the dealer or salvage yard. It's about two inches long by an inch and a half in diameter.
