1998 FORD RANGER FUEL PUMP

I have replaced the electric fuel pump. It did not work. I took the pump out and attached it to the battery. The pump worked. When I put it back in the tank it still did not work. I am thinking that it is something electrical in nature. What kinds of testing can be done? If a wire is disconnected, how would I trace it.

Are you cranking the engine when you expect the pump to run?
