My auto electrician tells me the somewhat humming noise from the compressor is due to a faulty bearing and can make the a/c malfunction.
Do you
have the same problem?

He is correct. You most likely need to replace the ac compressor, dryer and flush the system.

Yep but 'am told I can change only the bearing in the compressor, then probably check the (what the mechanic calls it)evaporator. Is it cheaper and safer to just change the compressor?

It is cheaper but not safer as the rest of the compressor is still old and may be an issue as well.
