The sensor was purchased and installed by a local repair shop. If you have the right part numbers I can buy them at the GM dealer and install them my self.

Thats pretty sad a repair shop replaced the wrong one. You can buy the sensors at auto zone the sensors have a high failure to begin with.I have a 1999 saturn SL2 and I have owned since 2006 and iam on my 4th sensor. The bottom coolant temp tells the computer what temp the coolant is so it can turn the fan on at the correct temp. Also those sensors crack and leak the sensors up untill about 2000-2001 the tips were made of plastic that went into the coolant. The plastic tips cracked and leaked coolant into the connector corroding the terminals in side the connector. Thats why I asked you to check and see if the terminals are a different color other then silver. That would mean they were corroded. You should be able to get both sensors from auto zone. Just make sure you put them in the correct place each sensor or you will cause issues. Make sure the sensors you get have brass tips where they go into the coolant. Let me know what you find and how it works for you.

They used the plastic tipped sensors untill 2000-2001 in the S model saturns. In 1996 S model saturns they went from two coolant sensor to one so you have one sensor. The sensors are only 10-11 so there cheap just to change as maintance item. It very well could have a plastic tipped sensor in it. Also make sure the connector going to it that the terminals arent blue or green instead of silver meaning there corroded. Other wise you will have to replace the connector as well. As far as the timing belt all the S model saturn engines use a timing chain. So if the chain isnt making noise then there is no need to replace the chain. My 1999 SL2 has 226,000 miles in it and the chain is still isnt making noise.

I have a new cooling fan motor and new relay in this car. The cooling fan kicks on as soon as the a/c comes on, however, that appears to be the only time it kicks on. The car will run at 1/4 on temp gauge on highway, but temp climbs to at least 1/2 in around town/stop and go traffic. Is it supposed to automatically kick in, and if so, what may be be causing this?

Your coolant temp sensor turns your fan on at 222-226 degrees on your car usually about a little over half way on the temp gauge.I would try changing the sensor pretty common for them to go bad on your car.The problem is there's only one sensor for the gauge and the computer so when they go bad you never know it because they always read lower then actual temp. There like 10 and easy to change they just screw into the head.Make sure you get a brass tipped one the plastic tipped ones crack. Also make sure you inspect it's connector for corrosion if it's corroded then replace the connector too.Make sure the engine is cold when changing and you will lose coolant.I posted a diagram of where it is figure 6 screwed into the head right below where the upper hose goes on.Let me know how it goes.

The cooling fan will only come on if the airconditioner is on. The fan will stay on untill the car engine is cooled down then shut off. The fan wont come on by its self untill the car is over-heating. Then the fan will come on. Im soory I dont have a donation becouse of the hard times right now but if I dont keep my car running I wont be able to even work. Any help you can give me will be greatly aprrciated

Inspect and test the radiator fan relay if okay could be coming from the computer itself or its not getting the correct input signal from the coolant temperature sensor or engine temperature gauge switch.

Most likely due to faulty engine coolant temp. Sensor, may want to test it out.

I have a Saturn SL2 and since i've had the car the Cooling fan hasn't come on. I checked the 30 amp fuse and swapped the relay with a different one. Both okay. Where do I look next. Whats the most common problem with the cooling fan system? It wasn't a problem during the winter and as long as i'm on the highway the temp is fine. The problem comes when i'm stuck in city traffic.

Hello, will the fan come on if you turn on the AC? With some systems the fan will run if you unplug the coolant temp sensor. A faulty sensor could cause the fan not to come on. Have you tried using jumpers off the battery to fan connector, take the connector loose, to see if the fan will run? You probably should use inline fuse with jumper.

Also check the relay that controls the fan, it may be not closing properly.

Ok, I think I'm the 3rd owner and have the manual from 1st owner. Can't find anything about:
When I turn off the Car a fan comes on and cools engine. Not sure if that is good or bad. Had a VW and it had one but I knew it. Did this year come with a cooling engine fan? It works just want to make sure that it's working in a good way. Thanks.
