I have a 1997 1.6 petrol nissan serena, when warm it does have Lack of acceleration, chugging, hesitating sometimes feels like it has stalled then catches again, first changed plugs and air filter and went ok for a few months, then started again changed plugs again, leads and coil no joy this time, now I am thinking it was the change of air filter that cured it for a few months-so could this be an air flow meter problem? How can I check if it is and if so can it be repaired or just change it.

You need a scope to check it. Would be easier for a shop to verify it for you.
It cannot be repaired only replaced if it is at fault.
Check the coolant sensor and make sure it is working correctly as well.
