No engine starter operation?

1999 Jeep Wrangler 4cyl 4wd. 106000 miles. Drove to the local gas station for a 6'er shut off my Jeep bought my goods got back in and it was dead just like that. Ran just fine before with the exception of it acting similar to starving for fuel at random times, speeds, & gears. The hole jeep would shake, extrem lose of power unless I left off the gas and only applied very little throttle.

So far I have confirmed that all the fuses, relays, & battery are fine through testing them and replacing battery. Still all I have is power to gauges, radio, lights etc. Just nothing when I turn the key over. No starter turning over just nothing. DEAD!

Check fuse no.2 40amp if okay disconnect clutch switch -jumper the clutch switch on top of the brake pedal and see what happens. See circuitry below

Hi there,
While describing your jeep you also described mine. I was wondering if you figured out the problem. I've had a couple of things changed: fuel filter, spark plugs, compression was checked and its ok, and timing. I'm curious to know if you have any answers. I'm in the process of moving and need to sell my car asap. Unfortunately I don't have the resources to take it to a dealer and have the repairs made. And of course no one will buy a car that is not in working condition. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And anyone too for that matter.

I tried a few things also minor things in my skills level. Checked fuses, relay's and bought a new battery since mine was to weak to pass a battery test. None of this helped so I got under it and played with the starter cleaning connections etc. Nothing. I brought it to a shop and they had it fixed in 4 hours. They found a few bad wires some of which are in the diagram I do believe.

Bottom line it was bad wiring from the starter and the clutch safety switch both. This was a bit much for me to deal with so I paid the $180.00 and had it fixed by a pro.

The starter solenoid has probably failed and needs to be replaced. You can confirm this by taking it to your local parts store to have it checked out. Sometimes they just go out for no apparent reason, but usually the starter will make a well defined grinding noise before this happens. It is almost always easier to replace the entire starter than replacing just the solenoid.

Thanks so much for your quick response, it did help out. I was referred to a shop that specializes in electrical/diagnostic, I figured it would be the best thing to do, otherwise I will just be going in circles.

All the gauges and lights come on, but when I turn the key to "start", nothing happens other than the clock display going dark. I can hear the relays clicking a few times, but then nothing.

I'd have to make sure the battery has a full charge and the connections are good. Did you try cranking in neutral? If it won't even crank, check the circuits at the starter relay. Terminal D10 is hot all the time. Terminal D11 goes hot with key in the crank position. Terminal D13 is ground for the coil side of relay and is wired through the neutral switch. When the relay is energized, that arm with the arrow-head switches to terminal D14, that circuit carries voltage to starter. Use a voltage tester on those circuits. I can't rule out the starter itself, right now. Some of the national brand autostores will test the starter for you, if you want to take it off and take it to them.

Brought new starter still won't start. Bypassed the starter relay and it started right up. Do I need to replace the relay?

First feel if the relay is clicking when a helper turns the ignition switch to "crank". If it's not, it isn't the fault of the relay. It's the fault of the circuit that runs the relay, and the most common cause is the neutral safety switch. Try shifting between the gears a few times, then see if the system works.

Swap the starter relay with an identical one from the fuse box (often a fuse box will have more than one identical relay). If the starter operates normally once the relay is switched, then the starter relay is bad.

I have 1997 jeep wrangler, wont start, turn key and everything lights up and stays on when key turned to start position but nothing happens no click no lights dimming just nothing. I disconnected safety switch on clutch and jumped but still nothing. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

The first thing we need to determine is the voltage on your battery. Do you have a voltmeter?
The battery might be fine but we need to verify it to be sure.

Your battery needs to be charged. If it is at 12 volts then it is fully discharged. Even though the lights still turn on the battery is dead.

Ok I will jump tomorrow but I thought it would still try to turn over and cause lights and gauges to dim but its like all is fully charged but when key is turned to start positon nothing dims and gauges dont drop but there is no click or starter trying to turn over so hopefully a jump will shed light on the problem and thanks for the help greatly appreciated thanks again

The battery needs to be at least 12.65 volts. Sometimes they still work when they are less, but a battery is considered fully discharged at 12 volts.
It is likely that this is not the only problem, but it is probably contributing to the problem.

I would agree with the battery being dead even though lights work but wouldnt there be something. The starter at least trying to turn engine but I have nothing not even a click. When my car did this it was the crank sensor but I know nothing about jeeps so just a guess.

Tried a jump and no go. I had meter on wrong range last night and after setting right I bhad 12.35 volts. So im back to square one.
