I have a 1997 Explorer XLT 4x4 V8 that I just bought used. The first time I fueled up I noticed that fuel leaked all over the place as I fueled. I looked between the driver's rear tire and the front of the wheel well and saw what looked like a hole in the tank. The hole is about 2 to 3 inches in diameter. I can stick my finger down into the hole and touch fuel. If I stick my straight in it touches a hard plastic barrier. I called the Dealer and they could not tell me what is supposed to be in the hole. It is die-cut, so it was manufactured this way. They told me not to drive it and to get it to a dealer who would inspect it. My question, does anyone have any idea what is supposed to be in this location? The filler tube is on the back of the tank, so this is not the filler tube hole. My thought was that this is where a pressure valve may be located and it is not present but I see no bolt holes for this part to bolt into place. Can someone help me?
have the same problem?
